Learn or Improve Your German With Nursery Rhymes

Nursery Rhymes are a useful device in language learning. They provide a window into a language's culture, vocabulary and ideas. As they are written primarily for children, they are ideal resources for language beginners. Here are a few of our German favorites:

'Wenn der Regen niederbraust'

Wenn der Regen niederbraust, When the rain bursts down,
Wenn der Sturm das Feld durchsaust, When the storm soaks through the field,
Bleiben Mdchen oder Buben Stay little girls or boys
Hbsch daheim in Ihren Stuben Nice at home in their rooms
Robert aber dachte: "Nein! - Robert however thought: "No! -
Das mu drauen herrlich sein!" That must be magnificent outside!"
Und im Feld platschet er And in the field he splashes
Mit dem Regenschirm umher. About with the umbrella.

'Hans Guck-in-die-Luft'

Wenn der Hans zur Schule ging, When Hans went to the school,
Stets sein Blick am Himmel hing. Always his sight hung on heaven.
Nach den Dchern, Wolken, Schwalben Past the roofs, clouds, swallows
Schaut er aufwrts allenthalben: He looks upwards everywhere:
Vor die eignen Fe dicht, Right in front of his own feet,
Ja, da sah der Bursche nicht, Yes, (even) there saw the lad not,
Also da ein jeder ruft:  Thus that everyone cries:
"Seht den Hans Guck-in-die-Luft!" "Look, Hans Head-in-the-Air!"
